Teaching English (Part 1) : Naga City Science High School

Today is August 7th, the first day for me to meet the students of Naga City Science High School. I went at 7:00 am and arrived around 7:35. The students were gathered in the school yard and that was the daily flag ceremony. In Phillippines the students attend a flag ceremony every morning from Monday to Friday, different from students in Indonesia which attend the flag ceremony only on Monday or specific national days such as Indonesian Independence Day, Pancasila Day, and Pramuka Day. Students, teachers, and staff that came late were required to wait in the gate until the ceremony was done. So did I. My praticumer friend and I also came late because of the traffic.

The flag ceremony was done so I went to the office to greet teachers there and introduce my self to them. They were very nice and welcoming. They gave me a desk together with the other practicumers from Ateneo De Naga University. There was also my cooperating teacher, her name was Ms. Aileen Tabayag and she is beautiful as well. We introduce each other and discuss how I will finish my practicum there. She assigned me to teach grade ten. At first, I was a little bit surprised because they have told me to teach Junior High Students but what, I assigned to teach grade ten. But then she explained that in Phillippines, grade ten belongs to Junior High and grade eleven to twelve belong to Senior High. That is different from Indonesia. In Indonesia Junior High School is from grade seven to grade nine and Senior High School is from grade ten to twelve. The school was started at 7:30 am until 5:15 pm everyday.

I entered grade 10 Kiwi class in the morning as the first class. Actually, grade ten were divided into four classes using fruits as its name. There were Kiwi, Quince, Mangosteen, and Lychee. The students there were very nice and smart. Many students were fluent in English, because in Phillippines, English has a role as the second language while in Indonesia English is a foreign language. Some students practice speaking in English for their daily activities. The last class was Lychee. The students there were so curious about Indonesia and they asked me many Indonesian words. I was so happy meeting them. The students were having conversation with me using English and they were able to manage their grammar well. I am impressed.

That's all for this part. Wait for the next part. See ya! :)
